In the past five years significant developments in new high-tech diagnostic devices, hand instruments and ultrasonic tips, and techniques have changed the way we teach and practice.  This presentation will update you on the latest theory and technique.  New videotapes recorded with the dental endoscope will reveal the location of residual calculus and the action of various ultrasonic tips and hand instruments on burnished calculus.
Topics of discussion:
*periodontal ultrasonography, voice activated probing, ACP products, fluoride varnishes, calculus and caries detection devices and other new diagnostic tools
*debridement of biofilm vs. removal of calculus - how important is root planing?
*new diamond coated instruments, furcation curets and other new hand instruments
*new piezo and magnetostrictive ultrasonic units and tips
*common clinical technique problems and solutions
*new fulcrums with 3:00-5:00 positions for scaling deep mandibular and maxillary pockets

Text Box: Anna Matsuishi Pattison received her BS degree in Dental Hygiene from the University of Southern California (USC) and her MS in Dental Hygiene from Columbia University.  She has been an Associate Professor at USC for over thirty years and has served as Chair of the Department of Dental Hygiene.  She is the coauthor of the textbook, Periodontal Instrumentation and has contributed to several chapters in the last five editions of Carranza's (previously Glickman's) Clinical Periodontology.  These publications have been translated into eight languages and are widely used periodontology textbooks around the world.  Ms. Pattison has been a featured speaker for the American Academy of Periodontology, American Dental Association, American Dental Hygienists' Association, Canadian Dental Hygienists' Association, and 35 state associations as well as groups in Asia, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.  She is currently the Co-Director with her husband, Dr. Gordon Pattison, of the Pattison Institute which offers lectures and hands-on instrumentation workshops throughout the U.S. and abroad. She is also the Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Dimensions of Dental Hygiene.  In 2005, she received the Pfizer-ADHA Excellence in Dental Hygiene Award and the USC School of Dentistry Alumnus of the Year Award.  In 2006 she received the California Society of Periodontists Award.
